a loose thread

"Spence, maybe its time you moved on." Keith didn't mean to sound indifferent about Gage, but he thought he'd gone way above the call of duty with this guy.

"Oh, sure, you'd say that." Spencer was about to have a melt down in the middle of their livingroom as he paced about talking about Noah in one breath and Gage in the next. "What would you do if..if something ..if Benny lost his memories, would you just..just toss him to the curb?"

"No." Keith squinted hard. He looked at Benny who gave him a sly look. "What I mean..is, you have to do what's gonna make you happy too. You know, Gage, wouldn't want you to be miserable. I think you should go out with Noah. At least, once." After all, Noah did ask him out for coffee. "Its just coffee, for God's sake."

"I wish I knew what to do." Spencer was in tears.

"Look, what if Gage is up to being with someone." Benny spoke up.

"He's not. He can't. I have to be there for him." Spencer shook his head, no.

"Hey, he's already messed around with Lucy." Benny shrugged.

"WHAT?" Spencer winced hard as he gritted in disgust.

"Sorry. I thought you knew." Benny was a bit stoic.

Keith looked over at Benny with a How could you look.

"Did you know?" Spencer glared at Keith.

"No." And he didn't. It was the first he'd heard this. "How could you?" He turned to Benny then and grabbed both of his arms. "I thought you told me everything."

"Sarah told me." Benny winced.

"Sarah? How did she find out?" Spencer wouldn't let it go.

Keith let go of Benny and turned back to Spencer. "See, its time for you to give up any thoughts that Gage is gonna be the same guy you think he is. He's not. Its time to stop carrying a torch for someone who never knew you, in the first place."

Spencer set down on the couch and began to sob. He hated to see his little brother this way. Keith put his arm around Spencer. "Hey, at least you got it out of the way with Noah. You told him everything about Gage, and he still wants to go out with you. Look, on the bright side, he likes you, Spence."

That awkward moment when you've just blurted out something you thought the other person already knows but turns out, he doesn't...
