bring back the past

Sage got out the broom to sweep the kitchen floor. Sometimes, the kitchen was actually her refuge. Washing the dishes could be like a religious experience. Of course, she'd never say it was her alter like her great Aunt used to say. Still, it was a comfort and it took her mind off things. Especially, the past.

She started with the corners, getting every little crack in the tiles. This needed to be done since there were a lot things she couldn't touch. Trevor, being one of them.

Sage thought of their encounter when she first got to this little town. Honestly, finding her half-brother was the last thing she thought possible, but when she saw him sitting a top of the bench in the park, smoking a cigarette it was just like she remembered him.

"When are you ever gonna kick that habit?" She had said as if she were the big sister she'd always been to him. Except, he was taller now. She thought on his smile now. How could she forget?

But it was a life time ago, when they were little and on the run. Stealing from Walmart just as easy as going into someones house and taking food right out of the fridge. They were damn good. Evidently, Trevor hadn't stopped that tradition.

"You still going by that name Sage?" He asked as if he was more calmer now, than he used to be. She guessed he stopped wetting the bed. She nodded, wondering how he knew. They'd been split up when she was ten. He'd gone into foster care and she'd had her father's relatives to raise her.

"What was so wrong with being Kelsey?" He smiled as if he remembered the good times, but she didn't think it that way. Not with a mother who was a drug addict and his Dad who was pretty much a thief and lord knows what.

She'd only shrugged as if she'd forgotten her former self. Only he knew that other girl. She knew he was still mad. Angry, in fact. How she'd left him like that. They were suppose to be together. After all, she was his big sister. She'd promised their mother she'd take care of him.

Sage could beg all she wanted. Nobody ever listened to her. Not from her father's side. They didn't want that boy. He was good as invisible to them.

It broke her heart when she saw his face on the TV screen, and now he was going to be a father, not even 17. Sage did her best not to let it upset her.

"Are you coming to bed?" Gage's voice awoke her to now.

"Its not that late." She looked at the clock on the microwave. It was almost midnight.

"It is, if you want to get up at six in the morning." He smiled.

"I'm almost done." She swept up the leftovers into the dust pan and put it to rest in the trash. She supposed that's where Trevor put her too. She doubted it would do any good to try to see him now.
