just maybe

Cory felt as if Manny was the third wheel these days. He supposed they got along. They ate meals together, sometimes. Still, Cory thought it might be awful lonely in the basement.

He'd find himself eying Em at the counter at work. She was mainly the cashier there. The only girl among the men at the auto repair place. She was friendly enough, but usually kept to herself.

"Do you need something?" Her dark eyes looked Cory up and down as he stood their holding his air-pressure pin. She was the pleasant sort. Always neat with her dark hair in a thick pony tail. Sometimes, she wore it in a French braid.

"Oh." Cory looked nervous. "No." He turned to go back to the garage. An engine was probably calling him about now, but he turned back, once more.

"I was wondering.."

"What? That I'd go out with you? They don't allow co-workers to date here." She reminded him.

"Yeah, I know. I-I don't want to go out with you..but...uh, are you seeing anyone?" Possibly, the wrong question to ask because she told him all about her ex, who had left her for some older woman.

"Well, um..my..my roommate isn't seeing anyone." Cory thought it best to make this simple as possible. "Maybe, you'd like to meet him. You know, come over for dinner." He told her his girlfriend could make the best baked chicken.

"I can't remember the last time I had a home-cooked meal." She shrugged as she got back to her computer.

"Well, then." Cory smiled. It was a date, but knew no one wanted to hear that.
