little memories

"Are you sure, you, are OK?" Gage wasn't sure he believed Sage when she got back from Benny and Keith's. "You can tell me. I want to know. I want to know how things were ..when ..you were growing up."

She looked at him then as if she'd rather not remember.

"I don't know..if..I should." She shook her head, no, but he took her hands and looked at the black chipped fingernail polish. Really, she was the kind of girl who should be wearing fun shades of pink. It was as if he knew someone else other than the Sage she tried to be.

"Please, I want to know. I want you to tell me, what's going on." He put his arm around her and they got comfortable on the couch. No one was home. It was just the two of them.

"Trevor hates me." She finally confessed.

"Why? You can't know for sure." Gage said as he stroked her hair.

"He should. I know he does. I was...never there for him. I wanted to be. I did. But, it didn't happen that way." She said they were close at one time, but they got split up. "He was just my half brother, and I had to go with my father..and..and ..I guess he got lost in the system."

She told him it was no picnic being raised by a Great Aunt. "She always looked at me, as if I were damaged. Maybe I was. I rarely saw my Dad." She sighed, sounding as if she'd had a very lonely life, growing up.

"I never forgot about Trevor." She shook her head. "He's family. I don't think he believes that. He..he still calls me, Kelsey." She cleared her throat, as she looked up at Gage.

"Kelsey?" Gage grinned. He was so close. She smelled lemony fresh.

"Well, my Mom hated Sage. Said, my Dad named me after his truck. She'd always wanted a Kelsey. And maybe I'd still be Kelsey if she were still around. But Sage is my real name." She told him.

"Huh? You were named after a truck?" Gage thought that was interesting. "But?" He winced then. "Do you want me to ..to call you Kelsey?"

"No, its just I'm sure Trevor would think of me as ..just Kelsey." She sighed.

"So you lived with your mother and your brother, growing up?" Gage asked.

Sage nodded. "And..and Trevor's dad." She told him that Mike was more of a drifter, than anything. "And a thief. He..was..." She bit her bottom lip. She hugged him close as if she wanted to put the man out of her mind.

Gage knew Sage wanted to tell him more, but she couldn't.

I'm glad that Sage is trying to open up more. :)
