making do

Declan couldn't believe it. He could see now how much River missed his older brother. They might have had different fathers but they were truly brothers. They carried on in French for a few minutes until finally River spoke in English. He introduced Declan. Phoenix gave him a hearty handshake. The next thing he knew, he called for his wife and little girl from the car.

"I wasn't sure if we were in the right place." His brother grinned. "Jeanette does all the driving." He remarked about his eye sight then, he wasn't quite totally blind.

"Are you hungry?" Declan then asked. He told them dinner was almost ready.

Naturally, his wife didn't want to intrude, but the little one who was no more than four, Caity, nodded.

"She loves noodles." Her mother told them.

For a while everyone spoke in French. Declan did feel like the odd one out. He didn't know if he had much to offer a little girl, but he told her the noodles were almost done. He showed her the broccoli he'd steamed. She smiled.

"You eat trees?"

"Yeah, these are perfect trees to eat." Declan went with it hoping she didn't hate vegetables.

"I think you should call him." Declan overheard River say to his brother. "He's your friend."

"But I'm at your house." His brother said back.

Declan could see River wasn't too happy about this, but he picked up his cell and made the call.

Declan couldn't help but smile. River was on the phone with Noah.

"We have enough for two more?" River then asked Declan.

"Yeah, remember how you said we'd have leftovers all week." Declan nodded. This was definitely an impromptu dinner party. Declan supposed he'd need to pull out some wine he'd been saving for such an occasion.
