Let them eat pie

Casey couldn't help but check out his slim sideburns in the mirror at Spencer's place. He'd invited them all over for Thanksgiving. Of course, it was getting kind of rowdy in the kitchen. Benny had just got here with a couple dozen of spring rolls, and everyone was trying one. You'd think no one had eaten all week by the laughter.

"Must you?" Sarah tapped his shoulder.

"What?" He looked back at her who was flicking cat hair off her black dress. She looked as if she were ready for church instead of dinner. Nobody else dressed up for this occasion. Casey was in his a tired gray T and roomey jeans that slid to the rim of his red boxers.

"You, are so vain." She was a bit lethargic, he thought. Maybe she was doped up on allergy meds. She always sounded like she was crying, lately.

"When have I ever sang that song?" He looked at her blankly. She gave him an idea then. It was as if a light bulb came on in his brain. "Hey, I should really do it, you know, punk version. That's the ticket." He gave her a toothy grin, but soon enough he was primping those dark sideburns. He was amazed he was actually growing something on his face. And to think his mom vowed he never would, being a quarter Omaha Indian an all. He sighed then. Must be the French in me, he thought with a pleasant smile.

"Oh my gwad, you dirt bag." She gave him a shove then so she could look herself over in the mirror. Her hair was up, and she looked years older, he thought.

"You know what I read about you on somebody's blog?" Her stare was scaring him. Suddenly, he felt kind of naked. He wished he'd kept his black and white checked flannel shirt on.

"A blog? People are blogging about me?" This was news.

"Yeah, its this local music scene. You know, who to watch for. Concerts. Crap like that." She wasn't very enthusiastic about it.

"Yeah?" He played with a sideburn, as if he rubbed it enough, all the hairs would grow in that were missing.

"They say, you are madly in love with your drummer." Her little twist gave way that she might be high.

Casey just chuckled.

"Huh? Better Benny than Cory. That's for sure." He just grinned. If he was going to be into anyone, why not Benny. Whatever would work to get people out for the food drive they were doing tonight at the club.

Someone called that dinner was served.

"What are you on?" He put his arm around Sarah. They were still old friends, weren't they? "I'd really like some if you don't mind sharing." They sat next to each other.

The rest of the band piled around. Not a prayer was said. First come, first serve. The whole gang was here, even Cory. Hands and arms were like a serious game of Twister to see who could get the most mashed potatoes and stuffing.

"Is someone missing?" He looked around. All the faces were there that he knew. Except one. "What's up with Ali?" He needed to talk to her. He'd heard her voice the other night when Spencer was playing around on the keyboard. She was singing like she might have been the solo act in a church choir. It was just what he needed tonight. Yeah, she was moving, and he really liked her sound.

"I dunno." Spencer looked at Benny.

"Isn't she always with you?" Casey looked at Benny then.

"I called. She didn't answer." Benny shrugged.

"Shit?" Casey tensed. "I really need to talk to her."

Just then the front door opened. She'd brought pies. Pumpkin, pecan and chocolate.

"Thank God, you're here." He looked at her then. She was going to save the holidays.
