Spencer had expected Keith to just go away. He honestly hadn't imagined he'd wake up in his own room just with his shoes off. And then to find Keith waiting for him in the kitchen with scrambled eggs and hash browns.
The first thing he told Spencer... that he'd missed his friend stopping by. Immediately, Spence thought of Ka-Rad and was instantly teary eyed. But then when he mentioned Benny, Spencer sucked in a breath and poured himself some coffee.
Keith served him breakfast then. He asked if he went to the bar often. Spencer shook his head, no. He might have blushed. Suddenly, Spence felt so hot as if he might be ill, but he manned up, drank the coffee and ate what was served.
"I don't normally go there, either. I was suppose to meet someone from high school." Keith looked at him as he cleared his throat. "But I found you. Right there. Right in front of me." He choked up a little. "You see, I guess I was suppose to not know you existed. Exactly. I mean, my-my dad used to talk about this kid." Keith hesitated then. "Well, he talked about this baby..when he was drunk. Sometimes, I'd listen and sometimes, I wished I had listened. But-" He sighed. "He was not always happy, and I lot of that had to do with my mother. It was just him and me, for the most part." He sighed then and scratched the back of his head. "She told him she sold you to some people for drugs."
Spencer stared at Keith as if it were some sort of ill fairy tale that had lost its meaning.
"I know who you are." Keith told him. "I never knew this house. I never knew any of this" He shook his head. "But I remember my mother's face. I do remember her. And I know I was suppose to have a brother. And its you."
Spencer looked at him blankly. How was he suppose to believe that? Really? Keith pulled out papers. He'd gone through the house looking for proof and it was all neatly there, a birth certificate, his father's last name. Keith's driver license. And a picture of their mother in Keith's wallet.
Spencer thought he might feel resentment, somehow, but instead he felt numb. Was this how a new dream started?
