a brain storm brewing

"You're scared." Lucy said it like an omen of some kind when she showed up, back at the flat.

Todd stared at her as if he didn't know what she wanted him to come back with. "How did you get here?" He asked instead, with a wince.

"I walked." She shrugged as if it weren't that big of a deal. He looked down at her dusty feet in flip-flops.

"You could have called me." He was a bit indifferent. Todd wasn't even sure what had brought her here. For all he knew, a tree told her she needed to be here at a certain time.

"I thought you were at work." She looked around the place as if it were some sort of inspection. Everything was in order. Not a mess, like back at her father's house.

"I was. They cut back my hours." He told her.

"But I thought you were one of the best." She looked at him blankly.

"Doesn't matter." He sighed. "Maybe if I had descent haircut myself, it would help, but I don't really bother."

"What are you going to do?" She asked as if she cared.

"Open my own shop." It was a possibility. He was thinking on it. But then again. Did anyone really need someone to cut hair. It was so dismal and then Lucy showed up.

"You wouldn't use chemicals, would you?" She snarled her nose in disgust.

"No. I cut hair." He didn't know why it was so important to her, at the moment.

"OK. And, we could sell things." She smiled as if she had an idea.

"Like what?" He didn't know if he could trust her. He hugged himself as if she must be delirious. Her brain was roting, now wasn't it?

"Things." She was so mysterious with her shrug. He winced with a soured face. "Come on, I will show you." She took his hand and pulled him all the way to their bedroom. She pulled out the plastic sweater box from under the bed.

Inside the box, all tidy in little bags of something. Todd stared, thinking at first she might have decided to make her own drugs, for all he knew, but she opened one up and showed him the tiny beads. Earrings. A lot of them, in fact. Bracelets to match. Necklaces too.

"Why were you hiding this from me?" It almost brought him to tears. Such intriguing designs in bright colors.

"I dunno. I'm not really an artist." She rolled her eyes as if it were nothing. Something to do when she was alone.

"Yes, you are." He winced hard. "You..." He sucked in a breath as if this wasn't easy, "You used to tell me everything, and now-"

"I'm sorry." She pressed her lips tight. "We should open the shop." She nodded, biting her upper lip. "And we'll sale Freaknoid crap." She chuckled then. There were loads of the Freaknoid T-shirts she'd designed herself and even some CDs. "We could have a place for the band. To perform. You think?"

"I suppose." Todd nodded. "It wouldn't be hard. I've seen it done. Used to have one in the old record shop." Of course, it was locked up tight now. No one bought records, anymore.

"Well?" She smiled as it were settled. None of her strange talk about the others.

Todd was going to keep his mouth shut. Hoping her sanity would last.
