"He doesn't look so bad." Benny was expecting the worst when he saw Gage. As if he might reform in a monster of some kind. Although, he did look a bit of a zombie. Benny wasn't going to dare mention that. He guessed the nurses and all wanted them to keep talking to him, but Benny didn't know what to say.
Instantly, he thought of his uncle who had died and how they'd let them all come in to be around his bed, and talk of him as if he'd already past even if he were breathing his last breaths which lasted a few more hours than expected.
Benny almost lost it. He couldn't stand being in the room. He had to go back to the hallway. At least, they were letting in the few that were Gage's 'family'. He hugged himself tight, trying not to think of his uncle, and that time. Of course, his mother was shouting things in Korean to his uncle. It was so mournful, too. Somehow, he thought they should have been speaking to him in English. For the life of him, he couldn't even remember what his mother had exactly said in Korean now. He shook his head. Sometimes, he felt no good to anyone. And what good was it to be here at the hospital?
But Todd woke him from his dis pare. Lucy was with him too. They were holding hands. This was highly unusual. Especially, now. Benny winced.
"How is he?" Todd wanted to know about Gage. Benny gave him a sad shrug. "But-but I thought he was getting better." Todd stared at Benny as if he had to say more.
"Yeah, I guess." Benny stayed indifferent, but Todd hugged him anyway as if he needed one. Lucy did too.
It was then, he felt the baby kick him hard, even if Lucy carried the baby so low in her womb. It was a sudden wake up call. Life.
Benny cleared his throat, straighten himself up. He guessed he better go back. At least be there for Keith because he knew Keith had to be there for Spencer. He followed Lucy and Todd.
