By the time Todd reached the hallway with Lucy, her water broke. This couldn't be happening, he thought. He hadn't had dinner. He was hoping he would at least get to stop by MacDonalds on the way home. But things change. He thought he'd be prepared. Maybe he was.
He stopped a nurse who saw what was happening. Soon enough they wheeled Lucy down to the OB ward in a wheel chair. He held her hand along the way. There were bits and pieces of a dream running through his head, that they might be married by now. It was a lost dream at that. But seriously, he was someone's father and he thought that child needed a proper name. His name. And perhaps, anyone would say it would be for all the wrong reasons. But he sensed things were better with Lucy. At least, he wasn't having nightmares of her trapped in a burning building. Just then he heard sirens. A cold chill ran through him. Todd did his best to focus on Lucy.
"Are we all right?" He hated to ask. It was tornado season. He hadn't listened to the news.
"I think someone's house is on fire." A nurse mentioned who helped Lucy into a gown and bed and hooked up to some meds for the pain and the birth.
"Really?" He thought of Lucy's house, instantly. Couldn't be. He looked at Lucy, trying to keep upbeat. "Isn't it great?" He said all happily.
"Sure, you can say that. If only you could have the baby for me." Her voice cracked.
Todd's face tensed. "She'll have a c-section, won't she?" That was the plan, or so he thought.
"Dunno, doubtful. Those contractions are coming fast." Another nurse said. Todd watched as the team practically pounced on Lucy. Finally a doctor showed up.
"You guys ready to have a baby today?" The doctor grinned as he slapped on the gloves.
Todd looked at him wide-eyed. He instantly felt dizzy and stumbled to the floor.
