once their was a boy

"Are you out of your mind?" Casey looked at Sarah as if it must have been a hormone thing with her. Loosing track of time, and going out with strangers.

"Ezra's hardly a stranger." She told him as they got ready to go over to her grandmother's house.

"He's kind of a nut." Casey assured her telling her what he'd witnessed on Halloween night at Todd's. "Its not pretty and you really don't need that kind of thing right now. Stay away from him."

"Please." Sarah rolled her eyes and she buckled herself in. "You are one to talk. How long did you know Nina before you two got hitched? Look, he's just a friend. And..and I always wanted to know him. He's so smart."

"He's not that smart, why would he be here?  Hmmm?" He looked at Sarah's directions to get there, but then he looked at Sarah and he thought she might be swooning over someone. "Are you kidding me? You have a crush on this crazy guy." Casey shook his head.

"OK, maybe a little. But not now. Its... you know, this is a chance to, just, catch up." Sarah sighed. "I have nothing better to do."

Casey didn't want to bring up Craig. He looked at Sarah's pregnant self and thought she'd gotten bigger since last week. At least she had her parents. Hopefully, she remembered that.

Soon enough they were on the lane where her grandmother lived. The houses just got more expensive at every turn. So if his so called Dad that he shared a last name with was so rich, why did he ever join the Army?

Finally, they parked in the elegant driveway, and rang the doorbell. He was kind of scared. Not sure what to expect. But soon enough he met Emily, who hugged him like a long lost pup. Then she looked him over as if her investment hadn't quite paid off.

"What did your mother do with all the money I sent her?" She wanted to know.

"What money?" Casey was caught off guard wondering if he owed her now.

"I'm a fool. I should have known she would have spent it on herself." She was uneasy as she spoke of his mother.

Casey didn't know what to say.

"I had plans to take you away from her. Early on, but my husband wouldn't hear of it." She hugged him again. He knew he was like family to her even if it wasn't so. He looked at Sarah. She was family too. Always would be.

"Lets not worry about that now." He found himself inviting her to Thanksgiving. Only he didn't know exactly where dinner would be.

I do feel sad for the grandmother. I hope they can both be there for her.
