a blind moment

"So? Did he write anymore?" River pulled the book up in front of his face. They were sitting at the dining table and he was twiddling with his electronic cigarette all the while between his finger tips, and chewing Memento gum.

Declan noticed this must have been the fifth time River was reading The Outsiders. He probably had it memorized now.

"You mean she? S.E. Hinton is a woman." Declan told him.

River's eyes lit as if how could she had written such a book. "Really?" He put the book down and played with the cigarette more. "This makes me so sad. Of course, it would have been different if a man wrote it."

"What are you getting at?" Declan winced as if he hadn't a clue what was going on in his mind. They cooked together. Every night. They painted the livingroom a room which was bright and supposedly apricot, and their bedroom a dark mauve. The house was beginning to not look of his parents' ownership, anymore. The livingroom was sunny and River had taken a piece of plywood in the garage and made his own creation, which was bold and very abstract to cover the wall behind the couch.

"Nothing. I guess. You know, her words are so genuine and sincere. How could that possibly be from a man's point of view? No?" He thumbed through the pages. "I lived with a writer. Once. A novelist, he said. He thought he was amazing." From the looks River was mimicking, Declan supposed this person was full of himself. "But, he was moody. Jealous sort. He beat me, on many occasion. Sometimes, for no reason. As if I got off on that sort of thing. I left. But, didn't have any place to go." He was mute then. Declan could see the hate on his face.

"But you must have went somewhere?" Declan's eyes were wide open. "After all, you're here."

"Hahaha. You really are more witty than you let on, aren't you?" River let a little smile slip from the sadness, and his hand touched Declan's cheek. And Declan let him. Declan's eyes leveled with his as if it were a staring competition now.

River pursed his lips slyly. He kissed Declan, leaving his gum in Declan's mouth. Declan swallowed it before he knew it was even there. Declan thought he might die, but he didn't. River went to get them coffee.

Haha, they are odd but they work for each other.

The last paragraph makes me feel like, subconsciously Declan doesn't trust River. Like he can't see things ending well between them even though he likes him at the moment. There is definitely some trust issues (both ways).

Nothing like choking on gum after a passionate kiss.
