"What was that for?" Declan said so nervously as he slapped the book into River's stomach. Of course, River thought he might cave in on top of him, full of laughter.
"For the right reasons, all right?" River finally sighed as he needed a basket now for all their little treasures. He loved how the sunlight hit Declan's face so. But, he hadn't meant to upset him. They walked together down the rows of clothing for one last look.
"What could that possibly mean?" Declan hardly spoke above a whisper.
"Nic's fun, but... you know. I don't want fun." How could he explain it?
"But..what about spring break?" Declan shrugged.
"I don't get a paid vacation. Now do I?" River wasn't smiling now.
"But he would have paid for everything, now wouldn't he?" Declan shook his head as if he was unsure what he was even saying.
"I guess. But its not always free. I'd have to hang out with some old dudes, I'm sure of it. And I'm not..I'm not Nic. He's clearly disgusting." Perhaps not in the beginning, but it would be so, by the end.
Declan nodded.
"You really are quite adorable, you know." River couldn't help it. "That's why I want to read The Hobbit." What he didn't say, was the fact he'd change it up in his head. Reinvent the story. Couldn't he play Orlando Blooms part from the movie? He smiled to himself then. It might be a stretch, but it was a nice daydream. Maybe it wasn't all bad, not to have a TV.
"The Hobbit?" Declan winced.
"Its your favorite book, isn't it?" River saw him reading it, often. Declan nodded. "See, I need to read it. So we can discuss it."
They got to the cash register to pay for their stuff. Declan didn't seem so nervous now. River, didn't want him to feel that way, around him.

Dunno if Declan was truly jealous, but I can see now that River just might have feelings for him. Perhaps, they really do have what it takes to be more than friends. Only, I think River isn't counting on that.
I wish they were more comfortable around one another. :/
They have a lot to figure out. If their might be something 'romantic' actually between them. I think River actually wants to be more than friends with him, yet at the same time, doesn't want to ruin their friendship, either.
Aww, this was sweet. I think I can really see River turning around :)
They are cute together!
