if that's all it is

Sage went into the kitchen to get some iced tea. It was actually nice on the back porch. Maybe fall was right around the corner. Now she had Trevor helping them, too. She guessed she needed to do something nice for them. Maybe she'd order pizza. They were half way through the plums. It was a longer process than she expected.

"So what are you guys doing?" She smiled at Jake that was in Ezra's arms. He was walking about with Jake as if something else was on his mind. Finally, she took Jake from him. Ezra was being awful quiet. "You, OK?"

"I dunno." He shook his head as if he was perhaps sick of a lot of things. As if he needed a long walk to think. The last time he did that, months ago, he'd had a seizure on the side of the road. She knew those times were few and far between now. At least, he was on his meds. Honestly, she didn't think he needed to be alone with a baby, sometimes.

She thought he was going to tell her what was on his mind, but Sarah sprang up from the basement stairs. She was all smiles. Immediately, she talked about the new house. But in the next breath she sounded as if she felt sorry for Sage, taking Ezra's old house.

"It won't be that bad." Sage smiled. "Besides, Ezra will be getting some rent money." There was an upside. It wouldn't happen until late September, anyway. His Mom was leaving for Florida in a few weeks.

Of course, Ezra was being mute in all of this. His hands shoved deep in his old khakis. Although, Sarah didn't  seem to notice. She slipped her arms around Ezra and cuddled up to him as if they were about to embark on the most amazing time of their life. Their new house.

"Its not my house." Ezra said almost bitter.

"Oh, it is too." She kissed him on the chin, because he was not going to bend so she could kiss him closer.

Sage only watched as she held Jake so he could watch them, closely too.

"Maybe, you two need to talk." Sage took Jake with her, outside to the plum de-seeding. It was hard to say if it would do any good, thought Sage. Sarah probably didn't see a problem.
