modest much

Spencer didn't mean for the time to get away from him with Connor. It was a pleasant surprise. All this talk about music reminded Spencer how much he missed the band. He wanted to make something happen. Sure Todd was trying. Not very much happened with the band these days. They had a few interested. Some fresh blood, but there was high school or some such problem to contend with.

And here was a band groupie. He was really startled that this Connor would be so taken with another Conor. Besides, was he even legal?

Spencer supposed he was. They went for drinks after dinner. Connor shelled out his driver's license. He was twenty-one. Spence found it hard to believe.

"You wouldn't fake something like that?" Spencer needed to know.

"What?" Connor cracked up. "I hate when people think I'm just fifteen. What do they take me for?"

"Well, you can't be baby faced forever." Spencer was beginning to feel very old at just twenty-four.

"You aren't that much older than me." Connor looked him in the eye as if they'd both be youthful for a very long time.

Spencer almost smiled, but the reality was setting in, it was getting older by the second at home. His phone paged him, but he ignored it.

"Why don't we go back to your place. You know, play me something." Connor's smile was so pleasing and Spencer would like a chance at that.

"I dunno, about tonight. My place is kind of a mess." Spencer shrugged as if it would not be a good thing if they went there.

"Then, some other place." Connor looked at him as if he wanted a chance, but it didn't have anything to do with music.

Spencer looked away. Were they finished here? Half drank long neck beers. He blew a breath. Connor putt down a couple dollar bills. He flashed his credit card.

"Its on me." He grinned.

Spence looked at him a little concerned. The drinks were paid for, but there was a motel just across the parking lot.

A cold wind blew them in that direction. Funny, how all the elements seem to be the decision factor in the night. Snow started to blow in the wind. The next thing Spencer knew it was thick as soup out, and the wind was starting to howl. But they were warm inside the room, yet too dark to make out the bad art and cigarette burns in the bedspread.

No. They had each other. Evidently, it was right where Connor wanted to be with that sneaky grin of his.
