making dinner

Spencer was feeling good about everything. His classes were great. The band finally got a gig they could count on and he was just chilling now, getting dinner ready.

He'd chopped up mushrooms and onions. He was making veggie lasagna with Ka-Rad. They always enjoyed cooking together. And he felt impossibly giddy at the moment.

Spencer fed Ka-Rad a bite of fresh mushrooms while Ka-Rad stirred the pot of noodles. He went to see about the filling. It was a bit of a science project. He was the one who always was precise when it came to a recipe. He hated to flub up a meal. Of course, Ka-Rad was dancing around being his silly self, stealing a kiss from Spencer when he could.

Still, he couldn't believe how far they'd come. So soon. He'd never had this growing up. There was always worry about his mother. What had she done this time. Had she ODed. Did she even know she had a son. Did she even care.

It was good those times were behind them. But as he watched Ka-Rad now, he wondered what kind of family he'd had. Were they in the circus? Gypsies? There was a lot he didn't know about him, that he wanted to know. But he wasn't sure how to ask. And he knew this was NOT the time to ask. It was dinner. And he planned to stay focused on it as he stirred up the egg in the filling.

"Awwwww..." Ka-Rad over dramatized when the buzzer rang as if someone had shot him in the chest. "Its time. Its time!" He went and dumped the hot water and noodles in a strainer, and did his part with the casserole dish, laying the noodles out. Now it was Spencer's turn with the sauce and the filling.

Just then Ka-Rad's cell rang. He answered it. "ullo?" It was quiet for the longest time.

"Jesus! You don't say. Can't-"  He winced then as he turned his back to Spence, who stopped and just watched Ka-Rad.

It was quiet for sometime. The noodles were getting cold. Ka-Rad sighed. "What do you want me to do?"

"Fine." He clicked off then and shoved his cell in his pocket. Ka-Rad looked as if he'd lost the fun in him.

"What was that about?" Spence blinked.

"Craig." Ka-Rad said without emotion. "My brother. He wants to come for a visit."
