Todd should have known it would have been just the two of them at the doctor's office. Naturally, Lucy was reluctant to go. He promised he'd be there every step of the way. She had nothing to be scared of. Just the same he nibbled at his bottom lip waiting to see if they'd send him to jail. Didn't know why he thought of this. She was seventeen. But he felt responsible for all of it. It scared him too that she could jump off the deep end if she wished. What if she killed herself, because of him? Hadn't she tried before? He felt he was in murky waters.
Naturally, the doctor gave them the third degree about waiting so long for a check up. "She's almost in her sixth month."
Todd only nodded. He wished he could say the right things, but he didn't know how. As luck would have it, they got them into the sonogram room as if it were an emergency. Lucy was all baby-dolled eye, not a scratch of makeup on. She looked a shell of some kind, but a very good home for a fetus that had invaded to live and feed off of her.
"She has so many signs of being a diabetic." The doctor said they'd run some test. The baby was huge.
"Is-is..the baby all right?" Todd finally sputtered as if he was on the brink of a heart failure.
"He's fine." They all looked at the monitor as if a documentary was in process.
"Oh." He was hoping for a girl. He couldn't help but let his eyes water.
"We'll, let you go, missy, as soon as you can give yourself a shot of insulin." The doctor sighed then.
Lucy turned to Todd as if they were asking her the impossible.
