in a pinch

"What are you really trying to do to me?" Ezra eyeballed Sage when she showed him the application on her trusty little netbook.

"I want you to fill it out." She eyeballed him right back.

As it was she'd talked the manager into letting Ezra work at the grocery store, unloading canned goods in the morning, which still left plenty of time to shelve books in the afternoon. She had him working, everyday.

"You just don't get me." He told her as he looked over the application she wanted him to fill out. One for getting a shelving position at the library.

"Believe me, I do." She begged to differ.

He wanted to groan, but didn't. She was quite impossible. "Don't you see, I..I enjoy my freedom."

"Oh, really..as in free loader?" She went to get a load of laundry out of the washer to put in the dryer while he studied the application at the kitchen table.

"Why do you care?" He winced as if she was asking too much of him.

"Because, if you are going to be here, you have to pay Spencer rent." She shrugged.

"Well, its not like he's said anything about cash, you know." He looked back at her in the little wash room next to the back door.

"Its the principle." She told him. "You are well, and able bodied. You can help out."

He looked back at the application on the screen and started typing. He winced hard. The keyboard wasn't the size he was used to.

"This is impossible." He snarled. As it was he was tired. His back hurt. "You're making me too old, before my time."

"You're just a little rusty." She assured him about the keyboard. "Quit complaining. You need to use that brain of yours."

He typed with two fingers then. It was more comfortable that way. But he still fretted. She couldn't make him be happy about this. Ezra couldn't imagine having two jobs. Having one was hard enough.

Maybe he'll get the point some day. Maybe she'll see a different side of him too.
