"Why would he need, you, for anything? Honestly?" River's words sounded so sophisticated yet unusual. Sage felt as if she hadn't heard one word correctly, at all. Maybe it was his accent. River was here to pick up Declan at the hospital. After all, he informed her, he was the one who brought him here. Didn't she have work or something to do?
She stood their in the hallway of the hospital, thinking she should take over, but evidently, it wasn't necessary.
"But-" She started to say something. Yet, she realized she hadn't really spoken to Declan, in some time now. Perhaps it was best if she didn't stick around. "I could bring food?" She held on to her coat as if she could hang around until they were sure Declan was dismissed.
She kept thinking of all the pain, Declan must be in. Perhaps not only physical, but emotionally, what she'd put him through. Only, she didn't want to make things worse for him, either.
"We have plenty of food." River stared at her as if he could look right through her. He would not be swayed by her, by any means.
"All right." Sage nodded as if she guessed this was how it would be. "Can..can you... just tell him, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything." And she was. It was hard to explain. But she was busy with Gage. It was too late to change that.
"I suppose." But River remained indifferent as he looked at his nails. He gave her a dead stare then. "You did hurt him, you know. You're not gonna fix it, being here either. Now are you?"
Sage felt a bit of herself choking for air. She couldn't seem to squint hard enough, nor even look at him. She walked away. Maybe it wasn't best for her to be around. River was right. She'd given him up.

I'm feeling sad for Sage. River seems pretty over protective, of someone.
River is so defensive, but maybe it is good for Sage to have some space for the moment.
Oh, I do wonder of River's intentions.
