nothing can tear us apart

As if Sage didn't see them enough at work, there Declan and River set at the bakery, next to each other eating something that usually one person would purchase. Declan ate half a sandwich and River was in the middle of the broccoli cheese soup.

"Do you want to sit with us?" River asked as she was waiting for a frozen drink.

"Sure." She guessed there was nothing to be afraid of. She sat down across from them in the tiny booth. She would have thought they were glued together. It was a little awkward, but perhaps they were just close roommates. She hated the thought of them, actually together.

"So what are you guys doing?" She did her best to make conversation.

"Chocolate cake." River pointed to the huge piece they were waiting to share. "Its Declan's birthday, and he wouldn't let me make him a cake." River nudged Declan, who only grinned.

"Its your birthday?" Now Sage felt heartbroken. That she didn't know. "How old are you?" She wondered if she'd need to guess that too.

"Twenty-three." He said very quietly.

"You should have let us known..we..we could have done something." Sage winced slightly. She looked at River. She supposed they were doing something, together.

"I don't really do a whole lot." Declan shook his head.

"But-" Sage felt so sad. "We..we stopped by your house other night. You guys weren't home."

Declan's eyes were open wide.

"We went to the movies." River grinned, nudging Declan more. But Sage knew River's car was in the driveway. It was becoming more clear to her by the second..they were a couple, and she hadn't done a thing to stop it from happening.

I do wonder if she feels she wasn't a good friend to him, like she should have been.
