Sure they could sit and talk, but Declan didn't want to be in the grocery store any more than he had too. It felt as everyone was moving on but him.
"Then why don't you do something about it?" Sage asked as they stepped in next door to Good Will.
Oddly, he picked out clothes for her. He found a floral sun dress that said maternity on the label.
"I dunno, what I could do." He shrugged. "I never even took my ACTs or ..." He couldn't even remember what the other test was, but if he were smart he'd know these things.
"Well, then take them." She insisted. She'd abandoned her cart of canned soups at the grocery store so they could take a little breather next door.
"I hate test." He didn't mean to scowl about it, but it was true. "Its just they always made me feel so bad about things in school." He didn't know how to explain his parents to Sage. Declan had to face facts. He was not a Go-Getter.
"Well, I'm sure River would help you." Sage was kind to say as she held up the dress. "I'll find some info at the campus. You can get ready for these test. Go to the library. There are practice tests online."
He wished this was all about himself and no one else.
"I'm worried about Allie, actually." He finally sighed. "I don't think she's happy with Cory."
"Well, they have a new baby." Sage reminded him.
"She wanted to leave him." Declan admitted. "Before she knew about the baby."
"And? What does that mean, exactly, Declan? Were you planning on helping her?" Sage looked him over as if maybe this had nothing to do with Allie, but more about himself and maybe River.
"I dunno. I thought about it. I would have. Especially, if..if she's unhappy." Declan dug for more items for Sage.
"Are you happy? Are you and River happy?" She wanted to know.
"Well, of course, we are. I just thought, maybe..maybe if she moved in with us. She's my friend, Sage." How could he explain this?
"And just how happy would that make River?" Sage seriously looked at Declan.
"I know." He sighed knowing it would be a completely bad idea.
"Maybe, they'll work it out. Maybe its all different now, too. Things have a way of working its self out." She told him.
Declan nodded. He thought how far apart they were from where he thought things might have gone between the two of them. But now a baby bump was in the way, and here he was buying her something he hoped would make her feel it was a blessing to be pregnant. Not a burden.
"I'll wear it when the weather warms up." She smiled and thanked him for the thrifted items.
