Craig felt as if he were sleepwalking for the next week. He didn't
know what was doing it, but he felt like his energy was zapped.
"Maybe, you're sick." Ezra shrugged.
Craig
came by to check on Jake. He needed to tell Ezra, how he
couldn't babysit for a while. A lot of things were up in the air. Like his
job.
Craig tried to grin, but he couldn't. He
didn't want to think Jess was making him sick. She was getting better.
Her bruises weren't quite as shocking. But maybe he was just getting
used to them. Not that they talked much.
They shared the same bed, only at different times.
He took Jake in his arms as if that alone was all the love he needed.
"I
really wanted see him." Craig knew Sarah wouldn't be happy he was here. Perhaps being around Jake would give him a certain kind of
energy, to go on.
Of course, Ezra was full of apologies. He felt bad about Jess' ordeal.
"And
you're staying at Spence's now?" Ezra asked how their old room was. "I
kind of miss it, you know." He grinned as if he'd had some good times there.
Craig
only nodded. Just the fragrance of Jake's baby smell felt like home.
Suddenly, it occurred to him that he might never have a home. Not like
this.
Craig couldn't help but think Ezra knew he was
home, where ever he was with Sarah and Jake. A part of him wished he had
that sort of faith.
